Men?s Golf in Seventh Through Two Rounds

LIHUE, Hawaii – The Washington State University men’s golf team concluded the second round of play at the John A. Burns Intercollegiate in Lihue, Hawaii at the Wailhua Golf Course, Thursday. The Cougars currently sit in seventh place.

The Cougars carded a 291 (+3) in the second round, matching their first-round score, to bring Washington State’s total to 582 (+6). The Cougars sit two strokes back from a fifth-place position alongside Arizona and UTEP (+4, 580). No. 2 California (-16, 560) leads the competition, while BYU’s Justin Keiley (-10, 134) is the top individual performer.

“We struggled early today and had to fight back,” Cougar Head Coach Garrett Clegg said. “The guys did a good job turning their rounds around. We lost a few strokes late, but overall played solidly today. Tomorrow we need to come out more relaxed. We have the opportunity to finish the tournament off well and get our spring season started great. I’m looking forward to see how we compete tomorrow.”

Junior Michael Anderson led Washington State, shooting 2-under par (70) in the second round. Anderson is 3-under par (141) through two rounds and is tied for eighth place. Senior Blake Snyder bested his opening round 73 (+1), carding a 72 (E) in the second round to finish the day tied for 23rd.

“The key today was my chipping and putting,” Anderson noted. “I didn’t hit the ball that great, but was able to take advantage of the opportunities I had and make par on a lot of holes. As a team, there is room for improvement. It can be a tricky course, but there are still many opportunities to make birdies and move up the leaderboard.”

Sophomore Bhurinat Songpaiboon shot 1-over par (73) to bring his two-round score to 148 (+4). Songpaiboon is currently tied for 39th. Redshirt junior Sang Lee is tied for 64th with a 151 (+7) through two rounds. Redshirt junior Alex Wagner shot 4-over par (76) to finish the day at 152 (+8).

The tournament concludes tomorrow with the third round. The round will play in a shotgun start format beginning at 8:30 a.m. HST (10:30 a.m. PST).
