Cougar Women’s Varsity Eight Takes Fawley Cup

SPOKANE, Wash. – The Washington State University women’s rowing team opened the spring season in dual action against Gonzaga and the varsity eight took the sixth-consecutive Fawley Cup with its victory Saturday morning at Silver Lake. The Cougars raced three varsity eights, two varsity fours, and three novice boats.
Head Coach Jane LaRiviere said, “It was a great way to finish off spring break. We had a chance to practice all of the things that we have been working on. While we executed well today, we still have a ways to go. The season is young.”
In the second flight of the day, the WSU varsity eight (Isabella Watt, Kendall Boliba, Mickey Aylard, Nicole Hare, Mollie McCabe, Jordan Watson, Morgan Cathrea, Elise Jones, coxswain – Sarah Wu.) faced a five mph headwind and posted the second fastest time of the day (6:55.49). The Cougar women out-stroked Gonzaga’s varsity eight by nine seconds (7:04.64).
The Cougar varsity four (Kim Coon, Chloe Rogers, Ashlee Bonahoom, Carly Johnson, coxswain – Julia Monroe) and the second varsity four (Erin Schuster, Gina Head, Ella Odland, Alyssa Rumann, coxswain – Rebecca Burns) also out-stroked Gonzaga in their respective flights. Washington State’s varsity four finished 26 seconds ahead of Gonzaga with a time of 7:51.40 and WSU’s second varsity four finished with a time of 8:07.88, nearly six seconds ahead of Gonzaga’s second varsity four.
In the fifth flight, WSU launched its second varsity eight (Mihaela-Teodora Berindei, Megan McDonald, Kerry Hassall, Noel Christiansen, Carter Marks, Ieva Adomaviciute, Emily Starkel, Kayla Wakulich, coxswain - Emily Boquet) and third varsity eight (Katelyn Maley, Krista Lizardi, Chloe Payne, Molly Culwell, Katrina Tarrant, Mallory Wordell, Alex Waddell, Sarah Steger, coxswain – Lauren Leahy). There was a two mph tailwind and WSU’s second varsity eight finished with the fastest time of the day (6:51.28). Gonzaga’s second varsity eight (7:03.65) and WSU’s third varsity eight (7:52.84) followed. The Cougar third varsity eight boat had to stop completely during the race to clear weeds out of the rudder.
In both novice flights, Gonzaga was victorious. Washington State’s novice eight recorded a time of 8:03.14 and finished behind Gonzaga’s novice eight (7:44.75). In the final flight of the day, the Cougar’s second novice eight and third novice eight finished in 8:06.41 and 8:14.77 respectively. Gonzaga’s second novice eight finished with a time of 7:47.01.
The Cougars will return to the water Saturday and Sunday, April 5 and 6, at the San Diego Crew Classic.
