Women?s Golf Set For Three-Day Tourney
CORVALLIS, Ore. – After a three-week layoff, the Oregon State women’s golf team returns to action Monday through Wednesday at the Anuenue Spring Break Classic in Kapalua, Maui.
FIELD (15): Oregon State, Cal Poly, Colorado, Fresno State, Hawai‘i, Long Beach State, Mississippi, Nevada, Pepperdine, San Jose State, Santa Clara, Seattle, UC Davis, UC Riverside and Washington.
COURSE: The tournament will be held at the par-72, 6,022-yard Kapalua Bay Course.
BEAVERS’ LINEUP: Oregon State will go with a lineup of seniors Lauren Sewell and Seshia Telles, junior Anica Yoo, sophomore Chelsea Saelee and freshman Jesse Hamilton. It’s the first time in her career Hamilton will be in the Beavers’ lineup.
FORMAT: Three-day, 54-hole tournament with 18 holes each day. The top-four individuals from each five-member team with the lowest scores for each 18-hole round constitute the scoring members for that given round.
TEE TIMES: There will be a shotgun start at 7:45 a.m. HT (10:45 a.m. PT) each day. The Beavers will be paired with Nevada, UC Riverside and Washington in the first round.
QUOTING HEAD COACH RISË ALEXANDER: "For this event we were able to play four qualifying rounds to determine the lineup. Not only was that a great opportunity to determine who would be in the starting five, but also gave the team a chance to get in several repetitions at Trysting Tree where we are hosting the Pac-12 Championship in April. Also, this time of year to play consecutive 18-hole rounds at home is good for the players and gives them valuable on course situations from which they can gain experience and learn from.
Four of the players have competed at this venue in Hawaii at least once and we are pleased that freshman Jesse Hamilton is in our lineup for the first time. She will definitely add a strong long game to our team.
The 15 team field is somewhat weaker than in years past with Washington (10), Pepperdine, (15), UC Davis, (37) and Colorado (49) being the only teams ranked in the top 50. Oregon State is currently ranked fifth best in the field at 66. However, It is important for our team to remember that they control their own destiny, not their ranking necessarily, by committing to each and every shot on the course. If they continue to learn from experience and give themselves opportunities to perform, the result will simply take care of itself. If they are able to simplify their thoughts, stay present with each shot and manage their emotions, the results will show in their score. It’s the process not the outcome we are encouraging commitment too.”
LAST TIME OUT: Oregon State finished in eighth place and senior Lauren Sewell posted a top-20 finish at the Bruin Wave Invitational that concluded on March 4.
The Beavers finished the two-day, 54-hole tournament with a 62-over 301-309-316--926 at the par-72, 6,173-yard El Caballero Country Club to place eighth in the 17-team field. No. 1 USC won the team title with a 1-under 863, while hosts Pepperdine and UCLA were second and third, respectively, with a 12-over 876 and 22-over 886.
Sewell led Oregon State for the second time in its three spring events as she finished in a tie for 18th place with a 10-over 73-77-76--226. She had a team-best six birdies in the three rounds and has been very consistent in the final season of her outstanding collegiate career.
Seshia Telles fell seven spots on Tuesday to finish in a tie for 31st with a 15-over 75-76-80--231 and Anica Yoo was five strokes back with a 20-over 75-83-78--236 for a tie for 47th place. Chelsea Saelee finished in a tie for 55th with a 23-over 78-79-82--239 and Ashlee Pickerell posted a 31-over 82-77-88--247 for a tie for 73rd.
LAST YEAR AT THE ANUENUE SPRING BREAK CLASSIC: For the fourth time in her junior campaign, Seshia Telles fired a 2-under 70, this time in the final round of the Anuenue Spring Break Classic in Hawai’i, to help the Oregon State women’s golf team finish in 14th place.
As a team, the Beavers were unable to put four solid rounds together each day, which prevented them from a better finish among the 18-team field, finishing with a 39-over 305-300-298--903.
Telles concluded the three-day, 54-hole tournament with a 2-over 73-75-70--218 at the par-72, 6,036-yard Kapalua Bay Course to finish in a tie for 18th place.
Telles started Wednesday’s final round on the 12th hole and took a bogey on the par-4 13th, before bouncing back with birdies on the par-4 14th and par-5 15th to get her to 1 under. She bogeyed the third, birdied the fifth and bogeyed the seventh, but responded with birds on the par-4 ninth and par-5 10th, and a par on her final hole of the tournament, to give her a 2-under 70.
Anica Yoo was the next Oregon State player on the leaderboard, as she finished the tournament in a tie for 34th place with a 7-over 77-71-75--223. The sophomore was well on her way to an outstanding final round, getting to 2 under through eight holes, but finished with three bogeys and a double for a 3-over 75.
Lauren Sewell also got to 2 under early on Wednesday before finishing with a birdie and four bogeys for a respectable 1-over 73. Her solid final round helped the junior move up six spots on the leaderboard and finish in a tie for 43rd place with a 10-over 76-77-73--226.
Ashlee Pickerell wrapped up the tournament in a tie for 78th place with a 20-over 79-77-80--236 and Chelsea Saelee was two strokes back with a 22-over 80-77-81--238 to put her in a tie for 84th place. Rachael Fischer competed as an individual and also shot a 22-over 79-79-80--238 to tie her with Saelee for 84th.
Pac-12 teams held down five of the top six spots with UCLA claiming the team title with a 10-under 854. Grace Na of Pepperdine ran away with medalist honors with a 10-under 67-71-68--206.
