Ducks Can?t Hold Off Buckeyes in Second Half

03/26/14 | Women's Lacrosse

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Five-straight goals in the second half from No. 17 Ohio State put the game out of Oregon's reach Wednesday afternoon at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium. The Ducks dropped their third-straight game on the road, this time to the Buckeyes, 13-9, despite a late rally in the second half.

Nikki Puszcz became only the sixth player in program history to record 100 career-goals when she fired in UO's first goal of the day to tie the game up, 1-1, in the first half.

Her team-leading four goals tied her season-high in goals while her five points also tied a season-high in the losing effort.

Shannon Propst had a pair of goals on the day while assisting on three other goals for five points on the day, giving her 191 career-points. The senior is now just three points shy of surpassing Illsa van den Berg (2006-09) to become Oregon's all-time leading points leader.

Wednesday's game saw the Ducks' opponents score the first goal of the game for the first time this season.

Oregon (4-4, 1-0 MPSF) played well in the first half, trailing No. 17 Ohio State (7-4, 1-1 ALC) by just one goal, 5-4, heading into the break.

Holly Johnson's goal at  the 26:22 mark in the second half tied things up, 5-5, before the Buckeyes took a 7-5 thanks to Katie Chase's goal at the 20:28 mark.

With 17:44 left to play, Puszcz intercepted a Cian Dabrowski pass just outside the 12-meter fan at raced down the field and fired in the Ducks' sixth goal of the day.

Ohio State however responded in a big way, bombarding the Caroline Federighi with five-straight goals, three of which came from Chase who finished the game with a game-high seven goals.

Puszcz once again stopped the bleeding for Oregon, but it was too little too late as the Buckeyes ran out the clock to seal the, 13-9, victory.

The Buckeye's Kaila Gottlick and Chase combined for 10 of Ohio State's 13 goals.

The Ducks now head to Cincinnati, Ohio, for a 9 a.m. (PT) showdown with the Bearcats of Cincinnati on Sunday, March 30.
