TEMPE, Ariz. Anica Yoo and Chelsea Saelee each shot a 2-over 74 in the opening round of the three-day, 54-hole PING/ASU Invitational to lead the Oregon State women's golf team on Friday.

The Beavers are competing in a field that features 13 of the 15 teams ranked in the top 40 by Golfstat and the tough completion left them in 15th place after shooting a 20-over 308 at the par-72, 6,223-yard ASU Karsten Golf Course.

“There are no excuses for our poor performance today,” Oregon State head coach Risë Alexander said. “They prepared well yesterday and appeared ready and committed this morning. I am confident that they can turn their performance today into a beneficial learning experience if they choose to do that. We are encouraging them to do just that and hold their head high. These players are capable of so much more. I believe in them.”

Yoo had three birdies and five bogeys and Saelee added two birdies and four bogeys as they each fired a 2-over 74 to put them in a tie for 38th place. Yoo had her birdies on the par-4 first, par-4 third and par-4 11thholes, while Saelee got her birds on the par-4 eighth and par-4 ninth.

Lauren Sewell and Jesse Hamilton both shot an 8-over 80 and Seshia Telles finished with a 9-over 81. Hamilton had a team high-tying three birdies on the day but took three double-bogeys that kept her from a better score. Sewell and Telles, two of the top golfers in school history, struggled as Sewell was unable to get a birdie and Telles only had one.

Washington leads the tournament through 18 holes with a 4-under 284, while host Arizona State is second with a 1-under 287 and South Carolina and Arizona are tied for third with an even-par 288.

Ani Gulugian of UCLA and Katelyn Dambaugh of South Carolina each fired a 4-under 68 to share the individual clubhouse lead.

The second round begins at 8 a.m. on Saturday and live scoring is available at golfstat.com. The Beavers will be paired with UC Davis and Washington State.
