Offense Catches Fire In Tuesday?s Spring Practice

The Cougars worked through their similar routine of individual position workouts, 7-vs.-7, some kickoff return and 11-vs.-11 team. WSU opened practice with field goals from redshirt-freshman Erik Powell from around 40 yards out.

The defense opened the team session with a big hit to stuff a running play but the offense answered in a big way. Following a long run from junior Teondray Caldwell, redshirt-senior quarterback Connor Halliday connected with redshirt-freshman running back Jamal Morrow who got behind the defense for a 70-plus yard touchdown. Halliday stayed hot, dropping in a pair of over-the-shoulder completions to redshirt-senior wideouts Kristoff Williams and Rickey Galvin before tossing touchdown passes to redshirt-senior wideout Vince Mayle in the left corner of the end zone and another to redshirt-junior wide receiver Drew Loftus in the right  corner. The defense came up with a stop as redshirt-junior linebacker Darrly Monroe stopped Caldwell short of the goaline but Halliday closed his day with a soft-thrown touchdown pass to Galvin in the corner of the end zone.

Redshirt-freshman Luke Falk ran the second series but saw the defense open with a couple stops as freshman linebacker Dylan Hanser blew up a running play before redshirt-junior defensive tackle Xavier Cooper got to Falk for a “sack.” Sophomore cornerback Daquawn Brown kept his strong spring going with by breaking up a short pass attempt on a quick screen to a wide receiver. Falk regrouped and fit a tight completion to redshirt-junior wideout Tyler Baker in between a couple defenders.  Brown made another play for the defense, coming up to pop senior running back Marcus Mason who had caught a short pass in the flat. Falk closed the day with touchdown pass over two defenders to Baker in the back of the end zone.
