Women’s Gymnastics Places Four on Pac-12 All-Academic Teams

BERKELEY – Along with scoring top marks on the gym floor to lead Cal to its second consecutive NCAA Regional berth, four Golden Bear gymnasts also scored top marks in the classroom to earn Pac-12 All-Academic recognition, the conference announced Monday. Pac-12 Women’s Gymnastics Scholar Athlete of the Year and senior Alicia Asturias was named to the first team, as was sophomore Serena Leong, and seniors Leilani Alferos and Dallas Crawford are Pac-12 All-Academic honorable mention selections.

To be eligible for selection to the academic team, a student-athlete must have a minimum 3.0 overall grade point average and be either a starter or significant contributor.

Asturias three-peats as a conference first team selection after carrying a 3.83 GPA as a psychology major. She was named the sole Pac-12 Women’s Gymnastics Scholar-Athlete of the Year for 2014, and has also twice earned NACGC Scholastic All-America honors. After graduation, she plans to attend medical school to pursue pediatric orthopedics or psychological research. In 2014, she claimed a team-leading 12 event titles and set or matched career-high scores on every single event and the all-around. She is one of two Cal gymnasts advancing to this week’s NCAA Women’s Gymnastics Championships as an individual competitor.

Leong, the 2013 Pac-12 Freshman of the Year, is a bioengineering major with a 3.80 GPA who also produced nine event titles for the Bears. She was a 2013 NACGC Scholastic All-American and set new personal bests on all three of her events.

This is Crawford’s third consecutive honorable mention award and Alferos’ second. Crawford, who was also a 2013 NACGC Scholastic All-American, carries a 3.25 GPA in American studies and was stellar for the Bears as a vault and uneven bars specialist, earning an individual berth to the NCAA Championships as a bars competitor. Alferos has a 3.43 in business administration competed on three events this season, claiming two event titles on the uneven bars with a career-high 9.925.
