WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - CALIFORNIA senior Ben McLachlan was named the Pac-12 Men’s Tennis Player of the Week and USC junior Zoë Scandalis was voted the Women’s Tennis Player of the Week for play from April 8-14, the Conference office announced today.
McLachlan (Queenstown, New Zealand) went undefeated on the week at home, posting one singles victory and two doubles victories to spur the 19th-ranked Golden Bears to a pair of shutout Conference wins. Against No. 39 Oregon on Friday, the 69th-ranked senior teamed up with freshman Andre Goransson to pull out a tight, 8-7(6), win over Daan Maasland and Joey Swaysland to clinch the doubles point, before upsetting No. 59 Robin Cambier, 7-5, 6-2. Against Washington on Saturday, McLachlan and Goransson won the first doubles match of the day as Cal would go on to clinch the doubles point for the 4-0 victory that left McLachlan’s singles match against Emmett Egger unfinished. The Bears are now 14-5 overall and 4-2 in Pac-12 play.
Scandalis (San Diego, Calif.) had match-clinching victories in back-to-back matches for the Trojans, helping No. 13 USC to victories over No. 19 Arizona State and No. 25 Arizona. The junior posted straight-set wins over ASU’s No. 68 Stephanie Vlad and UA’s No. 60 Lacey Smyth, as both victories locked the Trojans in for the win with their fourth point of the match. In doubles, Scandalis paired with Kaitlyn Christian at the No. 1 spot, with their first match suspended against Arizona State after the doubles point was already clinched for the Trojans. In their second match, the duo defeated Lauren Marker and Kim Stubbe, 8-2. USC is now 16-6 overall and 7-2 in Pac-12 play, while Scandalis improved to 17-7 overall in singles play and 13-3 in dual matches.
Both teams wrap up their regular seasons this week before heading to the Pac-12 Men’s and Women’s Tennis Championships in Ojai, Calif. Cal men’s tennis hosts Bay Area rival Stanford on Saturday, April 19 at 1 p.m. PT. USC women’s tennis travels to face rival UCLA on Friday, April 18 at 12:30 p.m. PT. The match between UCLA and USC will be televised on Pac-12 Networks.
