Rössler and Childs Move Up For Cal In Pac-12 Day Two
CORVALLIS, Ore. – The California duo of Nicola Rössler and Carly Childs both improved their places on the individual leaderboard and will enter the final day of the Pac-12 Women’s Golf Championships with opportunities to both earn a top 10 individual finish.
Only six schools have at least a pair of golfers sitting in the top 12 with California earning the distinction as one of those schools as Rössler and Childs are tied for 10th and 12, respectively, after 36 holes. Rössler shot a 1-over 73 Saturday and has a 72-73=145 (+1) overall; Childs also shot a 73 Saturday and has a 73-73=146 (+2) overall.
UCLA maintains its hold at the top of the team standings with a 3-under 573 while Arizona (-2, 574) and Stanford (+1, 577) follow behind in second and third. Lindsey Weaver of Arizona and Erynne Lee of UCLA are the individual co-leaders with 4-under 140’s after 36 holes. As a team, California is eighth with a 298-299=597 (+21).
Through two rounds and 36 holes at the Trysting Tree Golf Club, Rössler and Childs have both hit par on 27 holes – tied for seventh-most in the tournament.
Rössler, the lone senior on the California women’s golf team, has improved her performance at the conference tournament in each of her seasons. She took 36th after scoring a 232 (+16) as a freshman in 2011, tied for 23rd with a 224 (+8) in 2012 and held steady at 24th as a junior last season after scoring a 224 again. Currently sitting 10th overall, Rössler is on pace to have the best individual showing at the tournament since Joanne Lee finished fourth in 2012 with a 3-over 219 (77-71-71).
Childs hit three birdies Saturday and will look to become the first Golden Bear sophomore to earn a top 20 finish at the conference tournament since Lee took eighth in 2010 with a 220 (67-77-76).
Freshman Lucia Gutierrez improved two strokes from Friday and is 42nd with a 77-75=152 (+8). Gutierrez began the day with a birdie on the par-4 10th and hit another on the par-5 14th and now leads California with five birdies through 36 holes.
Competing in her first career Pac-12 Championship, junior Jo Ee Kok shot a 78 Saturday – as did sophomore Hannah Suh – as Kok is 48th individually with a 76-78=154 (+10). Suh is tied for 51st with a 77-78=155 (+11).
The Bears tee off on the 10th hole Sunday beginning at 8:30 a.m. Cal is grouped with Oregon State in the final round and will play in the order of Suh, Kok, Gutierrez, Childs and Rössler.
