UCLA Spring Recap: Bruins Post 8-1 Record

The winning ways continued for the reigning NCAA women's soccer champions, as UCLA posted an 8-1 record in spring play, with its only blemish coming in a one-goal loss against 2013 International Women's Club Champion INAC Kobe in Japan.

Seven Bruin players scored seven or more points in the nine spring games, led by Rosie White, who led the team in scoring with five goals and 10 points. Darian Jenkins was close behind with eight points off three goals and two assists. Courtney Proctor and Sam Mewis each had three goals and one assist, Taylor Smith recorded two goals and four assists, and Kodi Lavrusky and Annie Alvarado totaled two goals and three assists apiece.

UCLA's spring season began with a 3-0 win over USC on Mar. 9. Kylie McCarthy had a goal and an assist, and Proctor and Taylor Alderete also recorded goals. Smith earned two assists. The Bruins went 1-1 in Japan, losing 3-2 to INAC Kobe on Mar. 23 and defeating JFA Academy on Mar. 27. UCLA scored on an own goal and a 56th minute goal by Jenkins against INAC Kobe, and White and Smith scored the goals in the win over JFA Academy.

After their return from Japan, the Bruins embarked on its final six games over four consecutive weekends. UCLA recorded a pair of shutouts on Apr. 5, defeating the San Diego SeaLions, 3-0, and UC Irvine, 4-0, behind two goals and two assists from Alvarado over the two contests. In the San Diego game, Jenkins, Proctor and White each scored goals, and Alvarado had two assists. Against UC Irvine, Alvarado scored a pair of goals, White scored another, and Lauren Kaskie recorded the game-winner in the seventh minute.

The current Bruins defeated the alumni on Apr. 13, 3-1. Mewis had a goal and assist, and Claire Winter and White scored the other goals for the Bruins, while former All-American Sarah-Gayle Swanson scored for the alumni. Following that game, the Bruins played Arizona State and won 3-0 on second-half goals by Sarah Killion, Mewis and Kaskie. Cassie Sternbach earned the shutout.

UCLA picked up a big win over the U.S. Under-20 National Team on Apr. 19, defeating the U-20s, 2-1. Playing against their own teammates Jenkins and Katelyn Rowland, who were with the U-20s during their training camp, White and Kodi Lavrusky scored to give UCLA the victory.

And in the spring finale, a first-half offensive explosion led the way to a 5-3 win over the LA Blues on Apr. 26. Lavrusky, Jenkins, Taylor Smith and Mewis gave UCLA a 4-1 halftime lead, and Proctor scored in the first minute of the second half. Lavrusky had a hand in each of the first four goals, scoring the first and assisting on the next three.

UCLA's title defense will begin in August. The fall schedule will be released in the coming months.
