Golfers Earn 22nd Consecutive NCAA Regional Berth
LOS ANGELES, CA -- The 16th-ranked UCLA men’s golf team earned its 22nd consecutive NCAA Regional berth last week and will travel to San Antonio, TX to play at Briggs Ranch Golf Club beginning tomorrow.
The Bruins earned the No.3 seed and will be paired with top-seeded Georgia and No. 2 seed Central Florida when the 13-team tournament begins on Thurs., May 15. There are six, 13-team regional tournaments beginning on May 15, and the top five teams from each regional and the top individual not associated with those teams, will advance to the 2014 Men’s Golf Championship, May 23-28 at Prarie Dunes CC in Hutchinson, KS.
UCLA has advanced to 11 straight NCAA Men’s Golf Championships, a school record, and has won two national championships (1988 and 2008). In the history of the regional qualification format, the Bruins have captured five titles, including the 2013 crown at Tempe, AX (Karsten GC). Current Head Coach Derek Freeman has guided the Bruins to three regional crowns (2013, 2011 and 2009). UCLA has also produced three individual regional champions.
Freeman has announced the following lineup: senior Anton Arboleda, juniors Matt Pinizzotto and Preston Valder, and sophomores Lorens Chan and Jonathan Garrick. UCLA enters the tournament with a victory at the Redhawk Invitational on Apr. 7.
Overall, eight Pac-12 teams will be participating: Stanford, California, Washington, USC, Arizona State, Oregon and Colorado. Four players will also represent two Pac-12 schools: Eric Oja and Alex McMahon of Arizona and David Fink and Alex Franklin of Oregon State.
Briggs Ranch will play to a par of 72 over 7,206 yards. The NCAA Regional Championships are 54-hole stroke play tournaments.
