Pac-12 announces softball players of the week

May 5, 2014

WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - WASHINGTON senior infielder Hooch Fagaly was voted Pac-12 Softball Player of the Week and UTAH freshman pitcher Sammy Cordova was voted Pac-12 Softball Pitcher of the Week for play from April 28-May 4, the Conference office announced today.

Fagaly (Chino, Calif.) hit 4-of-6 on the weekend with five runs scored, one triple, one home run, four runs batted in, a 1.500 slugging percentage and an .800 on-base percentage in the three-game series against Arizona, where the Huskies took two of three for the series win. The senior’s home run was a walk-off grand slam to give the Huskies an 11-7 win over the Wildcats on Friday, her second walk-off homer in two weeks. In the first game of the doubleheader against UA on Sunday, Fagaly went 1-for-2 with two runs scored, a walk and a triple, which was just the second triple of her career. Fagaly has now hit safely in 17 of her past 20 games, including a career-high nine consecutive games.

Cordova (Huntington Beach, Calif.) picked up a pair of complete-game victories over Cal to help Utah earn its first-ever Pac-12 sweep. The freshman allowed only two earned runs on 12 hits in 13.0 total innings during her two appearances. She struck out eight and walked three Golden Bears. Cordova allowed only six hits in her first career complete-game shutout as Utah earned an 8-0 win over Cal in six innings during Thursday’s run-rule victory. During the series finale, Cordova allowed two earned runs on six hits to go with three strikeouts and a pair of walks against the Golden Bears. She improved her record to 10-8 on the season and now has eight complete-game efforts during her freshman campaign.

It is the first-career honor for both Fagaly and Cordova. Fagaly’s Player of the Week nod is the 89th all-time for the Huskies, while Cordova’s is the third all-time for the Utes since Utah joined the Pac-12 Conference.

Both teams close out the 2014 season this week. Washington travels to Berkeley to close out Pac-12 play in a three-game series against California, with all three contests scheduled to be televised on Pac-12 Networks. Utah, which finished Conference play last week, rounds out its regular season with a three-game series against Grand Canyon, including a doubleheader on Friday.
