Ginger Miles Leaves Cal for U.S. Lacrosse

BERKELEY - After three seasons as head coach of the California women’s lacrosse team, Ginger Miles will step down from her role in order to accept a position as Pacific Regional Manager with U.S. Lacrosse, the sport’s national governing body.

“It has been an honor to serve as the head coach of the Cal women’s lacrosse program,” Miles said. “It’s been a pleasure to coach such talented and special student-athletes, and I wish them the best of luck in the future. They have helped me grow as an individual and become a better person. I also want to thank everyone who has supported me from my assistant coaches, alumni, parents and the fans during my time here. I will always remember fondly the three years I spent in Berkeley.”

Under Miles’ guidance, Megan Takacs became the first All-American in the history of the program in 2013, as well as a back-to-back MPSF Player of the Year. In addition, Miles mentored eight other players who earned All-MPSF honors, including junior Gaby Christman this past season.

“I want to thank Ginger for her time, hard work and dedication to our lacrosse program over the past three years,” said Director of Athletics Sandy Barbour. “Through her emphasis on both academic and athletic success, she is leaving Cal lacrosse on solid footing with a bright outlook ahead, and we wish her the best of luck in the next step in her career. We will undertake a national search for a head coach who understands the mission and vision for Cal Athletics, and I am certain we will find the right person for the position.”

Miles compiled a record of 21-24 in her three years at Cal. She guided the Bears to an 8-8 mark in her first season in 2012 and to a 9-7 record last year, reaching the MPSF semifinals both times. Cal finished 5-11 during the 2014 campaign this past spring.

Miles has served on the U.S. Lacrosse Board of Directors and Women's Game Committee, as well as the Diversity and Inclusion Task Force, since 2010.

Prior to accepting her position at Cal, Miles led Claremont-Mudd-Scripps to a pair of conference titles and second-round appearances in the Division III NCAA Tournament. She was also a volunteer goalkeeper coach at Virginia, her alma mater, in 2009.

A 2006 UVa graduate as a government major, Miles worked as an admissions counselor in the Outreach Office for the University of Virginia Office of Undergraduate Admissions before entering her coaching professional. As a player, Miles started in goal for a pair of ACC Championship teams at UVa in 2005 and 2006.
