Brandon Hagy Named Academic All-District? 8

BERKELEY – Cal senior men’s golfer Brandon Hagy has been named to the 2013-14 Capital One Academic All-District® 8 men’s at large team announced Thursday as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America. The teams recognize the nation’s top student-athletes for their combined performances athletically and in the classroom. Hagy has earned the honor for the second consecutive season.

“I’m honored be an Academic All-District® selection,” Hagy said. “I’m especially proud of this selection being in the Haas School of Business.”

All student-athletes selected to one of the eight All-District® teams advance to the Capital One Academic All-America® Team ballot, from which the selections will be announced June 5. Hagy was a third-team Academic All-America® choice in 2012-13.

Hagy is a Business major with a 3.72 cumulative GPA who completed the work for his bachelor’s degree in December of 2013 and will graduate Monday from Cal’s prestigious Haas School of Business.

The honor is the latest on a long list of awards this season for the 2013-14 national player of the year candidate who has previously captured the Byron Nelson Award, Pac-12 Scholar-Athlete of the Year, Tom Hansen Pac-12 Conference Medal, co-team MVP honors, Cal’s Ben Furth Award and a Golden Bear Achievement Award. He was also a national semifinalist for The Ben Hogan Award, a first-team All-Pac-12 selection, chosen to represent Team USA in the 2014 Palmer Cup and the Pac-12’s Player of the Month for September of 2013. Hagy is a candidate for several more 2013-14 honors yet to be announced.

Hagy is ranked No. 5 on the most recent watch list for the Haskins Award, while he is the No. 7 collegiate player nationally in the latest Golfweek rankings and No. 8 according to Golfstat. Hagy has been an individual medalist three times this season (Jack Nicklaus Invitational, Arizona Intercollegiate, Aggie Invitational) and has finished in the top 10 in nine of 12 events with eight of those showings in the top five. He has also been Cal’s top finisher in four events and leads the team with a 70.83 stroke average. Hagy is the only Golden Bear to have played in each of the team’s first 12 events and 36 rounds in 2013-14.

As a junior a year ago in 2012-13, Hagy was a second-team All-American, All-America Scholar, third-team Academic All-America®, first-team Academic All-District 8®, NCAA Elite 89 nominee, All-Region, second-team All-Pac-12, Pac-12 All-Academic, Ben Furth Award and Golden Bear Achievement Award winner.

Hagy was an honorable mention All-American as a 2011-12 sophomore, as well as a NCAA Elite 89 nominee, All-Region, second-team All-Pac-12, tri-team MVP, Pac-12 Men’s Golfer of the Month (April 2012), Ben Furth Award and Golden Bear Achievement Award winner.

Prior to redshirting the 2010-11 campaign to gain entry into the Haas School of Business, Hagy was named a Student-Athlete of the Month at Cal in February of 2010 during his freshman season to honor his academic work.

Over his collegiate career, Hagy is a four-time individual medalist with 17 top-five showings and 21 finishes in the top 10.

Cal is currently playing May 15-17 at the NCAA Sugar Grove Regional hosted by Northern Illinois at Rich Harvest Farms in Sugar Grove, Ill.
