Video: Arizona softball escapes LSU to advance to super regionals

May 18, 2014

The Arizona Wildcats entered play Sunday needing only one win to advance to the 2014 NCAA softball super regionals, but the LSU Tigers were ready for a fight. The two teams squared off on Saturday as well and the Wildcats escaped with a 9-8 win, thanks to a game-ending 5-3-6 double play. With their backs against the wall Sunday and a freshman in the circle, the Tigers came out swinging.

The 5-1 loss hurt, but being the undefeated team in double-elimination regional format, the Wildcats knew they had one more chance to advance. Shelby Babcock was on her game in the circle early. So was Hallie Wilson, who gave Arizona the hot start they needed to escape the Tigers' claws.

Freshman Mo Mercado's walk-off blast sends No. 11 seed Arizona to the super regionals against No. 6 seed Louisiana-Layafette. The Wildcats and Ragin' Cajuns begin a best of three series Friday, May 23 in Louisiana.
