Hanewich Ends Home Slate

STANFORD, Calif. -- Brett Hanewich battled through a complete game on the mound and Austin Slater delivered a two-out, bases-clearing hit in the third inning to help Stanford secure a 5-2 win over Pacific Monday evening. The game put a close to the Cardinal’s 2014 home schedule in front of 1,084 fans at Klein Field at Sunken Diamond.

Hanewich (3-4) used a bend-but-not-break mentality to limit Pacific to two runs on 13 hits. The freshman, making his 13th start, was in the strike zone early and often in his first career complete game. Hanewich threw 109 pitches, 74 for strikes, while walking only one and striking out two.

Slater led the offense by reaching three times, including twice via walks. Danny Diekroeger also had a good day at the plate with two singles and two-hard hit outs. Alex Blandino walked in the third to reach for the 20th straight game.

Pacific (26-27) struggled defensively in a four-run fourth inning that helped Stanford pull away. The Tigers had taken a 1-0 lead in the top half, but quickly let the advantage dissipate.

Jack Klein led off the frame with a grounder to short that the Tigers could not handle and Pacific’s right fielder let Slater’s single bounce past him for three runs to come around to score. Hoffpauir followed by driving in Slater with a double to right to further take advantage of the Tigers’ miscues.

“It was huge for the momentum swing,” said Slater, who extended his career-long hitting streak to 14 games. “We felt like that was a big-time answer from us and definitely kept the momentum on our side.”

Hanewich retained the momentum in the Stanford dugout until the ninth when Pacific plated its second run. He quickly ended the threat with a ground out before the tying run could get to the plate.

Kyle Crawford was the tough-luck loser for Pacific, allowing five runs, but only one earned, in 3.2 innings. Stanford went hitless against three Tigers' relievers in the final 4.1 innings. 

The complete game was the fourth fired by a Stanford pitcher this season and the second by a freshman. Fellow newcomer Cal Quantrill blanked Kansas over nine innings March 9 and junior John Hochstatter threw back-to-back complete games April 27 and May 3 against California and UCLA, respectively.

The Cardinal (27-23) finished its home slate with a 16-11 record on The Farm. 44,442 fans came through the gates of Sunken Diamond in 2014 for an average of 1,646 per game.

Stanford also finished 10-1 in non-conference midweek games with the Monday victory.

The regular season culminates with a three-game series against Utah Friday-Sunday in Salt Lake City.
