Nick Rimando Named to U.S. Men's National Team World Cup Roster
UCLA alum Nick Rimando has been selected as one of 23 players who will compete for the U.S. Men's National Team at the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil, as announced by U.S. Soccer today.
This will be the first World Cup that Rimando will participate in. Overall, he has earned 14 caps for the USMNT and has posted four shutouts in his National Team career. Rimando has started two matches in goal for the U.S. this year, helping the U.S. earn a draw with Mexico and leading the team to a 2-0 victory over the Korea Republic in international friendlies.
Last year, Rimando started at goalkeeper in five of the U.S.’s six matches at the 2013 CONCACAF Gold Cup while leading the team to its fifth Gold Cup title. He went 5-0-0 with 12 saves in the tournament, posting a clean sheet in the final vs. Panama. Rimando never allowed more than one goal in any of his five matches and went to 6-0-0 with two clean sheets for the U.S. in 2013. Professionally, Rimando is in his 15th season in MLS, eight of which have come with Real Salt Lake. He is one of only two goalkeepers in the history of the league to post 100 shutouts or more and is one shy of matching fellow Bruin Kevin Hartman's MLS record of 112 career shutouts. Rimando has also won two MLS Cups, winning one with D.C. United in 2004 and another with Real Salt Lake in 2009.
At UCLA, Rimando competed for three years (1997-99) and was a three-time All-MPSF selection, earning All-America honors in 1998. Rimando still ranks second all-time in GAA with a career mark of 0.67 and has the second-most victories in a single-season in UCLA history, earning 19 in 1999.
Rimando will be the 15th UCLA player to play in the last seven World Cups. Overall, UCLA has had at least one player compete in each of the last seven World Cups. The U.S. will open World Cup play on Monday, June 16 against Ghana at the Estadio das Dunas in Natal, Brazil. The match will begin at 3 p.m. PT.
