Roundup: Directors' Cup, Woman of the Year at Stanford

Jun 11, 2014

Stanford won its 20th consecutive Directors’ Cup Tuesday. That’s pretty impressive. Additionally, Chiney Ogwumike was named Pac-12 Woman of the Year Wednesday. Also impressive.

Here’s a recap of the second day of the Ed O’Bannon-NCAA trial from Sports Illustrated, a day in which a Stanford econ professor (Dr. Roger Noll) answered questions about competitive balance in the NCAA, and his belief that there is a lack of it.

In light of the O’Bannon trial, the Denver Post conducted a Q&A with Jeremy Bloom, who holds out hope for a better future for college athletes. Bloom had the last two years of his college football eligibility taken away by the NCAA because of his pro skiing career.

Utah's Rosalie Waller will run for the Utes at the NCAA track and field championships, which begin Wednesday in Eugene. Waller will compete in the 800-meter semis Wednesday night; the final is set for Friday.

And while we’re talking track, read a Q&A with Lindsay Flanagan, Washington long distance runner and the GoHuskies.com Student-Athlete of the Week. She’ll be in the 10k field at the NCAA outdoors.

Since it has been so exciting in basketball, why not do it on the gridiron? Arizona and San Diego State football scheduled a future series for 2021 (Tucson) and 2022 (San Diego). San Diego State is becoming a de-facto Pac-12 member; the Aztecs have a Pac-12 team on their football schedule for the next nine years now.

New Oregon State men’s basketball coach Wayne Tinkle added Gregg Gottlieb to his staff as an assistant coach. Gottlieb spent the last seven years at Cal.

With Tim Esmay resigning, Scott Bordow of the Arizona Republic thinks that Arizona State should pursue UCLA’s John Savage as the Sun Devils new baseball coach.

Hey, there’s a chance that Washington State may have a new field design in which one end zone is crimson and the other is gray. Nothing is official yet, but this definitely looks clean.

It’s a shame that injuries derailed his pro career, but USC’s Harold Miner is finding post-NBA peace, living in Las Vegas with his family. He was the 1992 Pac-10 Player of the Year (he averaged 26 points per game that year; that’s unfathomable in college hoops) before embarking on a four-year NBA career.

Three Oregon football players make Sports on Earth’s college football breakout team for 2014, those being Arik Armstead, Pharaoh Brown and Johnny Mundt. Also on the list from the Pac-12 are Su’a Cravens (USC) and Marcus Ball (ASU).

Uncle Ted thinks that defensive end Brennan Scarlett is California’s most important player.
