EUGENE, Ore. – The California Golden Bears track & field team had one student-athlete in action at the NCAA Outdoor Championships at historic Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore. on Friday. Redshirt senior Derek White’s impressive season came to a close on Friday night, as he finished ninth in his flight and 17th overall in the discus with a best throw of 184-7 (56.27m). The Bears will have two more opportunities at individual national championships on Saturday, the final day of competition at the NCAA Championships.
White opened the competition with a throw of 179-8, and followed that up with a mark of 179-7. Heading into the third round, he needed to finish within the top nine overall to advance to the final three throws. The ninth and final spot was grabbed by Minnesota’s Dominique Howard, with a throw of 192-3. White’s PR mark of 194-11, set on April 12 in Berkeley at the Big Meet against Stanford, would have seen him through if he had been able to equal that effort.
The San Jose native had a tremendous final collegiate season in Berkeley, earning the Male Athlete of the Year honors from his peers at this year’s Oskis, and set new PR’s in both the discus and hammer (211-9), which rank eighth and third, respectively on Cal’s All-Time Performers List.
Cal will have two student-athletes in action on the final day of competition; sophomore Thomas Joyce in the 1500-meters final and redshirt sophomore Jonte Grant in the triple jump.
