Seven Bears Compete Thursday at Men?s World Rowing U23 Championships

Varese, Italy Seven Golden Bears were in action on Thursday at the World Rowing Under 23 Championships in Varese, Italy. The men’s eight featured five Golden Bears, while the United States men’s pair included two Cal standouts during Thursday’s competition. Action continues Friday and Saturday, culminating with the Finals on Sunday, July 27.   

The two men’s eight heats featured five Golden Bears representing four countries.

Australia, featuring Golden Bears Louis Snelson (five-seat) and Aaron Wright (six-seat), edged out the United States, featuring Cal’s Spencer Hall (five-seat), in the first heat race of the event. Australia crossed the finish line in a time of 5:38.82, with the United States finishing in 5:40.65. 

In the second men’s eight heat of Thursday’s action, Great Britain, with Cal’s Morgan Hellen (five-seat) placed third with a time of 5:44.88. The Netherlands eight, stroked by Cal’s Niki Van Sprang, was right behind in fifth with a time of 5:53.82. New Zealand placed first in the heat with a time of 5:39.60.

The U.S. men’s pair of Golden Bears Jordan Vanderstoep (stoke) and Cole Reiser (bow) finished fourth in its heat on Thursday, with a time of 6:56.51. Italy captured the heat with a time of 6:40.19.
