Cal Men’s Tennis Announces Fall Schedule
BERKELEY – California men’s tennis has a busy fall including eight tournaments and a season-opening match against the U.S. national junior team, head coach Peter announced on Friday.
The Golden Bears – who ended the 2013-14 season with a run to the NCAA round of 16 – open the 2014-15 season at home against the U.S. juniors on Sept. 17 at the newly renovated Hellman Tennis Complex. Two days later, they host and open play in the 14th annual Porsche Napa Valley Tennis Classic at the Meadowood Napa Valley Resort in St. Helena, Calif. That tournament ends on Sept. 21. Last season, then-junior Nikhil Jayashankar won his flight at Meadowood to reach the singles playoffs.
Next up are the Sept. 27-Oct. 5 ITA Men’s All-American Championships in Tulsa, Okla., with some Bears also headed to the Oct. 3-5 UC Davis Aggie Invitational from Oct. 3-5 in Davis, Calif. Last year, sophomore Mads Engsted won four straight matches before falling in the top-flight singles final in Davis.
Cal will likewise send split squads to its next two tournaments –the UCSB Gaucho Classic in Santa Barbara, Calif., and the Battle of the Bay at the California Tennis Club in San Francisco. Both events are scheduled for Oct. 10-12. Last season, Jayashankar continued his strong fall by capturing the singles crown at UCSB, while freshman Andre Goransson won his first singles title at Cal in the Battle of the Bay.
Looming next is the USTA/ITA Northwest Regional Championships, scheduled for Oct. 17-21 in Stanford, Calif. In 2013, Cal won the singles and doubles regional championships for the second straight year, which qualified Campbell Johnson for a singles berth and the duo of Gregory Bayane and Chase Melton for a doubles spot at the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships. Johnson as well as the pair of Bayane and Melton reached the rounds of 16 in their respective draws.
This year, the Bears will play in the Gael Classic from Oct. 31-Nov. 2 in Moraga, Calif., before the 2014 indoor intercollegiate, which will be held from Nov. 6-9 in Flushing, N.Y.
Cal will unveil the spring portion of its 2015 schedule in January.
