Alison Lee Advances to Round of 32 at U.S. Women’s Amateur
UCLA sophomore All-American Alison Lee was the lone match play survivor, beating August Kim 3 & 2. Senior All-American Erynne Lee lost 1-up to Simin Feng of the People’s Republic of China, and sophomore Bronte Law, a member of Great Britain and Ireland’s 2014 Curtis Cup team, fell 1-up in 21 holes to Jing Yan, also from the PRC. Lee will meet Jennifer Coleman of Rolling Hills Estates on Thursday in the Round of 32 at 8:30 a.m. EDT.
In her match against Kim, Alison Lee never trailed and built a 3-up lead through nine holes after making a birdie at the third and pars at the sixth and seventh. But Kim birdied the par 3 10th, and her pars at the 11th and 12th evened the match. Consecutive birdies at the 13th and 14th, and a par at the 15th restored Lee’s three-hole lead with three to play. She secured the victory halving the 16th with a par.
Erynne Lee found herself two down after the first two holes, but managed to square her match at the eighth with a birdie. She assumed a 1-up lead at the 10th with a par, and held that margin until the 14th when Feng made a birdie. Feng took a 1-up lead with another birdie at the par 5 15th. Both players halved the 16th with birdies, and the last two holes were halved, maintaining Feng’s 1-up margin.
Yan went 1-up after Law double-bogeyed the first hole and maintained that advantage until the sixth when Law’s par squared the match. The contest remained even for four more holes until Yan won the 10th and 11th with a birdie and a par to go 2-up. Law answered with a birdie at the 12th and a par at the 13th to square the match a second time. Yan’s par at the 16th gave her a 1-up lead with two to play before the 17th was halved. At the 18th, Law’s par won the hole, sending the match to extra holes. The first two holes were halved before Yan birdied the 21st to win 1-up.
