Daughetee Inks Deal with French Club Montpellier Hérault

BERKELEY – Former California women’s soccer defender Genessee Daughetee (2010-13) made history Monday as the first North American player to sign with Montpellier Hérault Sport Club in France.

Montpellier signed Daughetee following a trial period in which coach Jean-Louis Saez noticed her “jovial” spirit as well as her speed and ability to correctly anticipate plays.

“We are so happy for Gen to fulfill her lifelong goal of becoming a professional soccer player,” said Golden Bear head coach Neil McGuire. “She is an outstanding athlete and gifted player who has grown tremendously since she arrived at Cal.”

Daughetee was a staple of the Cal defense for all four years, appearing in 82 games. She capped off her final season by scoring her first collegiate goal against Detroit, and also tallied assists in the St. Mary's and Arizona matches for a career-high four points in 2013. Daughetee was a Pac-12 All-Academic honorable mention in 2011.

Daughetee is one of a string of Golden Bears who recently signed with international teams.  Aside from Daughetee, teammate Emily Kruger joined KR Reykjavik and Nina Pedersen joined Liverpool LFC this summer, adding to a number of pro Golden Bears that includes Katrin Omarsdottir (Liverpool LFC), Betsy Hassett (Manchester City LFC) and Alex Morgan (Portland Thorns).
