After an historic season, Pac-12 volleyball begins this weekend

Pac-12 volleyball is coming off its most successful season in history with a league-record nine teams earning NCAA Tournament bids in 2013. League teams will try to build on that success as the 2014 campaign is set to start this weekend ... 13 AVCA All-Americans return from last season, including AVCA National Player of the Year Krista Vansant of WASHINGTON. UW will look to Vansant to lead the squad back to the top of the standings in her final campaign after leading the Huskies to its first Conference title since 2005 in 2013. UW is also looking to make a second-straight trip to the NCAA semifinals as the season is set to begin ... It will not be easy for the Huskies to repeat in 2014 as three Conference teams earned national top-five rankings in the preseason, including STANFORD, which was picked to finish first in the regular season by the Pac-12 coaches and is also the highest-ranked team in the AVCA Preseason Coaches poll. The Cardinal was tabbed third in the nation heading into 2014, followed by the fourth-ranked Huskies and fifth-ranked USC. ARIZONA STATE was also tabbed 25th in the country in the ranking, its first appearance in the preseason poll since 1996. An additional five Pac-12 teams also received votes ... In addition to the returning All-Americans, Pac-12 coaches have done another stellar job of recruiting the nation’s top talent which resulted in four nationally ranked incoming classes and 11 Volleyball Magazine FAB 50 seniors ... Pac-12 volleyball has claimed 14 NCAA titles, the most of any conference in the country. At least one league squad has advanced to the national semifinals 30 times in the 33-year history of the NCAA Tournament ... An unprecendented 99 Pac-12 matches will be televised this year on the Pac-12 Networks and ESPNU.
