Bruins Earn Fourth Shutout of Season in 2-0 Win over San Diego

Aug 31, 2014

Los Angeles, Calif. - The top-ranked UCLA women’s soccer team posted its fourth shutout in as many games this year, defeating San Diego, 2-0, on Sunday.

UCLA (3-0-1) has yet to allow a goal this season and had held opponents to no shots on goal until San Diego (1-2-1) got one in the 58th minute of today's contest. Bruin goalkeeper Katelyn Rowland made the save on Jacqueline Altschuld's shot and added another shutout to her school record total of career clean sheets, which now stands at 40.

Senior midfielder Sam Mewis broke a scoreless tie in the 56th minute when she rocketed a long shot off her left foot past San Diego goalkeeper Michelle Craft into the left corner. Sarah Killion set up the play by intercepting a pass and passing to Mewis, who scored her team-leading third goal of the year.

Kodi Lavrusky gave the Bruins some breathing room in the 68th minute with her first goal of the season. Taylor Smith set up the play with a great through ball to Kylie McCarthy, who sent a perfect cross in to an oncoming Lavrusky. Craft got a leg on it, but the ball richocheted right to Lavrusky, who beat a defender to the deflection and one-timed it into the back of the net.

"It was a great finish," UCLA head coach Amanda Cromwell said of Mewis' goal. "When they play like that, when they're off of you, you've got to take advantage of taking a shot from distance like that. In the first half we had a few of those that just missed. I was glad for Sam to finish and Sarah to get the assist. And Kylie getting in there and getting the assist on Kodi's goal was huge too."

Prior to the two goals, the Bruins had been stymied by Craft, who made 10 saves in 76 minutes of play. Mewis also had a shot hit the post in the first half and the crossbar in the second half before she put in the game-winner.

The Bruins will hit the road for the first time next weekend, traveling to Hawaii to take on the Rainbow Wahine on Friday and Pepperdine on Sunday.
