No. 3 UCLA Pummels Cal Baptist, 21-3

LA JOLLA, Calif. -- The No. 3 UCLA men's water polo team continued its winning ways with a 21-3 win over Cal Baptist on Saturday afternoon at the Triton Invitational on the campus of UC San Diego. Senior Cristiano Mirarchi led the Bruins with a career-high seven goals. Senior Paul Reynolds added five goals in the victory.

Reynolds got the Bruins off to a strong start, scoring the first two goals of the game (7:13, 6:39) to put UCLA up 2-0. Mirarchi made it 3-0 with his first score at the 3:04 mark. Elad Gunya scored for Cal Baptist with 1:23 left to end the scoring in the first with UCLA holding a 3-1 advantage.

The Bruins dominated the second quarter, posting a shutout while scoring five goals. Mirarchi scored three straight (7:31, 5:25 and 4:53) to put UCLA up 6-1. Sophomore Patrick Woepse gave the Bruins a 7-1 lead with a goal at the 3:26 mark. Freshman Alex Roelse ended the scoring in the first half with :46 remaining to extend the Bruins' lead to 8-1 at the break.

The Bruins offense exploded for eight goals in the third period while holding CBU to one score to build a 16-2 lead heading into the fourth. Reynolds completed his hat trick (7:35) to push the lead to 9-1 and then Roelse added a second (7:02) to make it 10-1. Back-to-back scores from Mirarchi, his fifth and sixth of the contest (6:06 and 5:23), extended the Bruin advantage to 12-1. Reynolds added his fourth (4:51) to make it 13-1. David Ring snapped the Bruins' 10-goal scoring streak to trim the lead to 13-2 with 4:34 to go in the third. Then a trio of redshirt freshmen all scored to end the third period. Jack Grover struck first (2:05), followed by Maxwell Irving (1:17) and then Matt Farmer (0:14) made it 16-2 at the end of the period.

UCLA also won the fourth period, 5-1. Roelse completed his hat trick to put the Bruins up 17-2 at the 6:28 mark. Gunya scored his second of the contest for CBU (6:02) to cut it to 17-3. But the Bruins scored the final four goals of the contest. Reynolds scored his fifth of the game (5:48), and Mirarchi added his seventh (5:20) to put UCLA up 19-3. Senior David Culpan got in on the scoring act with a strike with 2:52 to go to make it 20-3. Sophomore Alec Zwaneveld scored the final goal of the game with 0:19 left to provide the 21-3 final.

The Bruins were 3-for-4 on power plays while the Bulldogs were 2-for-6 while neither team attempted a penalty shot.

Senior James Hartshorne started in goal and played the first half, registering five saves and allowed one goal. Senior Stephen White played the second half in goal and was credited with four saves while allowing two goals.

The Bruins return to action tomorrow for a pair of contests, beginning with No. 14 Loyola Marymount at Noon at Triton Pool.
