Anderson's relief win tops alums' NFL efforts

Oregon State alums in the National Football League combined for an outstanding day on Sunday as the league swung into action with a full slate of games. Here is a roundup of how the Beavers in the NFL fared this weekend:

DEREK ANDERSON (2001-04), CAROLINA: Starting in place of the injured quarterback Cam Newton, Anderson completed 20 of 34 passes for 230 yards and two touchdowns and gained 10 yards on three runs to lead the Panthers to a 20-14 win at Tampa Bay.

BRANDIN COOKS (2011-13), NEW ORLEANS: The 2013 Biletnikoff Award winner had seven receptions for 77 yards and a touchdown and one run for 18 yards in his NFL debut, a 37-34 overtime loss to Atlanta. Here is video of Brandin’s TD.

SCOTT CRICHTON (2011-13), MINNESOTA: The defensive end, also making his NFL debut, had one tackle in a 34-6 win over the St. Louis Rams.

DWAN EDWARDS (2000-03), CAROLINA: The defensive tackle had one tackle, sack for a nine-yard loss, in a 20-14 win at Tampa Bay.

JOHNNY HEKKER (2008-11), ST. LOUIS: Hekker averaged 45.5 yards on six punts, with a long of 57, and dropped two inside the 20-yard line in a 34-6 loss to Minnesota.

STEVEN JACKSON (2001-03), ATLANTA: The NFL’s leading active rusher with 10,733 career yards, Jackson gained 52 yards on 13 carries, with a long of 17, in a 37-34 overtime win over the Saints. He also had one reception for no yards.

ANDY LEVITRE (2005-08), TENNESSEE: Andy started at left guard for the Titans in a 26-10 win at Kansas City.

KEENAN LEWIS (2005-08), NEW ORLEANS: Keenan had three tackles and one defended pass for the Saints, a 37-34 overtime loss to Atlanta.

GABE MILLER (2007-10), WASHINGTON: The linebacker played but had no stats in a 17-6 loss to Houston.

MATT MOORE (2005-06), MIAMI: The quarterback was active but did not play in a 33-20 win over New England.

STEPHEN PAEA (2008-10), CHICAGO: The former Morris Trophy winner started at nose tackle and had three tackles in a 23-20 loss to Buffalo.

JORDAN POYER (2009-12), CLEVELAND: The former All-American cornerback had one tackle for the Browns in a 30-27 overtime loss to Pittsburgh.

JACQUIZZ RODGERS (2008-10), ATLANTA: Quizz ran six times for 34 yards and had one reception for one yards in a 37-34 overtime win over New Orleans. His 17-yard TD run gave the Falcons a 31-27 lead late in the game; here is video of that play.

MARKUS WHEATON (2009-12), PITTSBURGH: The wide receiver had six catches for 97 yards, with a long of 40 and a 16.2-yard average, in a 30-27 overtime victory over Cleveland.

NOT ACTIVE: Offensive lineman Josh Andrews (2010-13), Philadelphia;cornerback Brandon Browner (2003-04), New England; offensive lineman Mike Remmers (2008-11), Minnesota; cornerback Rashaad Reynolds (2010-13), Jacksonville (on injured reserve).

Two alums are also active in the Canadian Football League and played on Sunday. Here’s a roundup:

CHAD JOHNSON (2000), MONTREAL: Chad had three receptions for 73 yards, with a long of 43, in a 38-31 win over Hamilton.

JAMES RODGERS (2007-11), MONTREAL: James had an 83-yard punt return to give Montreal a 31-24 lead in an eventual 38-31 win over Hamilton. Here is video of James’ return.
