Skillman, N.J.—Arizona State women’s tennis had two singles players crack the top 50 on the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Division I Women’s Preseason Rankings, which were released Monday.  The Sun Devils were led by 28th-ranked Desirae Krawczyk, while No. 46 Stephanie Vlad earned preseason recognition as well.

Krawczyk, a junior from Palm Desert, Calif., led the team in singles and doubles wins last season and was selected to compete in the NCAA Individual Tournament.  At the NCAAs, Krawczyk won her first round match against Vanderbilt’s No. 48 Frances Altick 6-2, 7-5, but lost in the second round against No. 5 Hayley Carter of North Carolina 6-2, 6-2.  Playing at No. 2 singles, Krawczyk finished her sophomore season with a 20-4 dual match record, was ranked No. 39 in singles nationally and No. 8 regionally, and earned second team All-Pac-12 honors.

Vlad, a junior from Scottsdale, Ariz., had the second-most wins for the Sun Devils last season and finished in third place at the ASU Thunderbird Invitational.  Playing at the No. 1 spot for the Sun Devils, she finished her sophomore season with a 16-9 dual match record.  Vlad ended the season ranked No. 66 nationally and No. 12 regionally, and earned All-Pac-12 honorable mention.

Both players are qualifying singles for the 2014 Riviera/ITA Women’s All-American Championships.  The national event is set to begin on Saturday, Sept. 27, with prequalifying singles and doubles matches, which will once again be hosted by UCLA. Main draw action is slated for Oct. 2-5.
