Sun Devil WBB's Jackie Moore Attends WBCA Assistant Coaches Leadership Workshop

Sep 11, 2014

Sun Devil women’s basketball assistant coach Jackie Moore attended the inaugural Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) Assistant Coaches Leadership Workshop held at the Marine Corps Recruiting Depot at Parris Island, S.C., Aug. 26-29.

Held by the WBCA in partnership with the United States Marine Corps, the workshop was designed to teach assistant coaches from across the nation Marine Corps small unit leadership.

“It was an amazing experience to work along side USMC,” said Moore. “There are numerous similarities in what we do and in how the USMC builds a team—we both develop leaders and focus on common goals.”

Participating coaches observed first-hand the training of Marine Corps recruits, experienced a variety of physical activities and exercises, and learned about the Marines’ leadership principles about leadership and how those same principles can be applied in leading a team and developing leaders within a team. Over the two-and-a-half day workshop the coaches interacted with drill instructors and supporting Marines.

“There is no question that unity is a key component to leadership,” said Moore.  “At the workshop we were able to get a behind-the-scenes look at how marines are built. The USMC slogan is ‘We Make Marines.’  Our slogan for Sun Devil women’s basketball is ‘We Make Successful Women.’ We do this through teamwork, mentoring, and working with people from different backgrounds.”

The Marines have 14 leadership traits they follow: justice, judgment, dependability, initiative, decisiveness, tact, integrity, enthusiasm, bearing, unselfishness, courage, knowledge, loyalty and endurance.

“The sense of pride that they have in our country is unmatched,” added Moore.  “Their dedication and willingness to sacrifice their lives for our freedom should be celebrated each day.”
