CORVALLIS, Ore. It was a great start to the 2014-15 season for the Oregon State women's golf team and new head coach Sammie Chergo, as the Beavers sit in first place after 36 holes of play on Monday at the Oregon State Invitational.

The Beavers shot a 4-over 292 in the morning and followed that with a 2-over 290 in the afternoon at the par-72, 6,283-yard Trysting Tree Golf Club to lead the 10-team field with a 6-over 582. San Francisco is second with a 9-over 585 and Boise State sits in third with a 10-over 586.

The final round of the two-day, 54-hole tournament begins at 8:45 a.m. on Tuesday with a shotgun start. There will be no live scoring, but results will be posted to osubeavers.com and birdiefire.com. Admission is free to the public.

“I'm very happy how our team competed today,” Chergo said. “They played with a lot of passion and pride for Oregon State, and both (assistant coach) Dawn (Shockley) and I look forward to watching them compete tomorrow.”

Oregon State used a total team effort in its first event of the season as four players sit in the top 10 in the 57-player field.

Senior Anica Yoo, who has played in every tournament in her Oregon State career, fired a pair of even-par 72's to put her in a tie for fourth place and only three shots out of the lead. Yoo had eight birdies on the day with five in the opening round and three after the lunch break.

Freshman Haley Nist, who is making her collegiate debut, had no problem with first tournament jitters, posting an impressive even-par 72 in the morning with four birdies and a 1-over 73 in the afternoon with four more birdies to put her in a tie for sixth place with a 1-over 145.

Sophomore Krissy Peterson, who played in only four tournaments a year ago, also had a solid day by carding a 2-over 74 in her opening round and an even-par 72 in the second 18 for a 2-over 146 and a tie for seventh place. Junior Chelsea Saelee, another veteran in the Beavers' lineup, is tied for 10th after posting a 3-over 74-73--147.

Junior Ashlee Pickerell had the bounce back round of the day, shaving 11 strokes off her morning round with a 1-over 73 in the afternoon that helped her rocket up the leaderboard into a tie for 45th place.

Every player on the Oregon State roster is competing this week, including four players participating as individuals. Jesse Hamilton fired the Beavers' best score of the day, a 1-under 71, and is tied for 21st place with teammate Lauren Fischer with a 6-over 150. A pair of freshmen, Hannah Swanson and Laura Hoskin, finished their first collegiate competition with an 8-over 152 and 30-over 174, respectively.

Three players sit in red figures through 36 holes led by Clare Sorensen of San Francisco with a 3-under 141.
