CORVALLIS, Ore. Home sweet home! The Oregon State women’s golf team took advantage of playing on its home course by winning the Oregon State Invitational by a commanding 10 strokes in the Beavers’ first tournament of the 2014-15 season.

It was an ideal start for first-year Oregon State head coach Sammie Chergo and assistant Dawn Shockley, as the Beavers had three players finish in the top 10, led by senior Anica Yoo’s second-place showing, to cruise to the 10th team title in school history.

“I’m just so happy for our team,” Oregon State head coach Sammie Chergo said. “They have worked extremely hard since we started practice, and it’s very rewarding as a coach to see them find success. Both Dawn and I look forward to building on this momentum and using it to prepare for our next tournament at Portland State.”

OSU shot a 15-over 292-290-297--879 at the par-72, 6,283-yard Trysting Tree Golf Club to post its second-best three-round score in school history. San Francisco finished second in the 10-team field with a 25-over 889, while High Point was third (29-over 893), and Portland State and Boise State tied for fourth (30-over 894).

Yoo fell just short of winning her second career individual title, finishing with a 2-over 72-72-74--218, which was three strokes behind Isabella Leung of Hawai’i, who was the lone player in the field in red figures with a 1-under 67-75-73--215. Yoo won medalist honors at last year’s Rose City Collegiate to become the first Oregon State golfer in 16 years to win a tournament outright.

Junior Chelsea Saelee recorded the second top-five finish of her career after carding a 4-over 74-73-73--220 to finish in a tie for fifth place. Her best career finish is a tie for third at last year’s Rose City Collegiate and her best three-round score is a 3-over 216 as a freshman at the Stanford Intercollegiate.

Freshman Haley Nist had an impressive start to her Oregon State career as she finished in a tie for ninth place with a 5-over 72-73-76--221. It’s the first time a freshman Beaver golfer has posted a top-10 finish since the great Seshia Telles finished in a tie for ninth and tie for 10th in 2010.

Sophomore Krissy Peterson also had a very solid tournament, as she recorded career bests in finishes (tie for 13th) and three-round score (7-over 74-72-77--223). Her previous best marks came at the Westbrook Spring Invitational when she shot a 9-over 225 to finish in a tie for 55th at the Westbrook Spring Invitational.

After a tough opening round, junior Ashlee Pickerell bounced back in a big way over her next 36 holes by carding a 73 and 74 to finish with a 15-over 231 to finish in 35th place. She failed to get a birdie in the morning on Monday but dropped five over the next two rounds to climb the leaderboard.

Oregon State had all nine golfers on its roster compete in the tournament, as four of them participated as individuals. Sophomore Jesse Hamilton led the bunch with a 10-over 71-79-76--226 to finish in a tie for 22nd place, while senior Lauren Fischer was tied for 26th with a 12-over 76-74-78--228, freshman Hannah Swanson was a stroke back with a 13-over 76-76-77--229 for a tie for 29th and freshman Laura Hoskin finished 57th with a 39-over 87-87-81--255.

The 15-over 879 is the second-best three-round score in Oregon State history, trailing only the 10-over 874 it shot at last season’s Westbrook Spring Invitational. The 15-over mark shatters the Beavers’ record at Trysting Tree Golf Club, which was previously a 29-over 893 at the OSU Shanico Invitational in 2002.
