No. 18 Volleyball Sweeps NCCU In Residence Inn Invite Match

TEMPE, Ariz.—In its second match of the Residence Inn Invitational, the No. 18 Arizona State volleyball team swept North Carolina Central, 25-9, 25-14, 25-11, on Saturday inside Wells Fargo Arena.

The match is ASU’s first of the day, and the Sun Devils will wrap the invitational hosting Pepperdine tonight at 7 p.m. PT.

With the win, ASU improves to 9-2 on the year while NCCU falls to 0-14.

The Sun Devils came out swinging early, with 10 kills in the opening frame and an attack percentage of .643, while the Eagles committed 10 attack errors and hit in the negative for the frame.

In the third set, ASU opened with a 9-0 run sparked by the service of freshman Halle Harker, who finished the day with 12 digs. NCCU responded with back-to-back points before the Sun Devils once again went on a run, scoring 10 straight points, this time from sophomore Bree Bailey’s serves.

As a team, ASU hit .500 for the match with 37 kills and only four errors in 66 attempts. NCCU was held to .000 hitting on the day.

Junior Mercedes Binns led ASU with 12 kills and .706 hitting, while Bailey had 10 kills and hit .600. Juniors Macey Gardner and Bianca Arellano also hit .700 and .750, respectively.
