Sep 21, 2014

The UCLA men’s golf team, ranked 10th in the preseason GCAA poll, travels to the Husky Invitational in Bremerton, WA at Gold Mountain Golf Club. The competition begins Mon., Sept. 22 with 36 holes of stroke play, followed by the final round on Tues., Sept. 23.

This year’s Husky Invitational will feature a new format. The team competition will be played on the Olympic Course, and the individual competition will be conducted on the Cascade Course. As a result, the Bruins will be sending all 11 players on their roster: five for the team competition, and six individuals competing unattached for medalist honors.

Derek Freeman, entering his eighth season as head coach, has announced the following lineup for the team competition: senior Matt Pinizzotto, juniors Lorens Chan, Jonathan Garrick and Jake Knapp, and true freshman Corey Shaun.

Teeing it up in the individual competition are seniors Jay Hwang, Manav Shah, Kyle Pollema and Preston Valder, and freshmen Brandon Mai and Victor Ponte.

Last season Freeman led the Bruins to a tie for fifth place at the NCAA Championship. The Bruins won the Redhawk Invitational and recorded eight other Top 10 finishes. Chan and Garrick were named Honorable Mention All-Americans after leading the Bruins in scoring average. Valder won the CS San Marcos Fall Invitational, his first collegiate victory.

The Olympic Course will play to a par of 72 over 7,168 yards, and the Cascade Course will play to a par of 71 over 6,707 yards.
