Buffs Start Pac-12 Schedule Vs. Utah, At Oregon

BOULDER— The University of Colorado volleyball team starts the Pac-12 Conference schedule this week with a pair of matches against Utah and No. 13 Oregon. CU will host the Utes on Thursday, Sept. 25, at 7 p.m. MT at the Coors Events Center. The Buffs will then head to Eugene, Ore. to take on the Ducks on Saturday, Sept. 27 at 8 p.m. MT

The Buffs look to get back on the winning track after falling in their last three matches. Prior to those matches, the Buffs had put together an eight-match win streak, tying the fifth-best in school history. CU is 8-4 overall heading into league play, and is 6-0 at the CEC this season.

Senior Taylor Simpson is averaging 4.56 kills per set, the third best in the Pac-12, to lead the Buffs and is hitting .301. Senior Neira Ortiz Ruiz is second with 2.39 kills per set and sophomore Joslyn Hayes is third with 2.32 kills per set.

The Buffs are attacking at a .251 clip and have held their opponents to a .175 hitting percentage through nonconference play. Junior Nicole Edelman and freshman Gabby Simpson have each spent time setting for the Buffs. Edelman is averaging 8.24 assists per set, while Gabby Simpson is recording 5.64 assists per set.

CU is third in the Pac-12 with 1.69 service aces this season. As a team, they have recorded 76 aces and are led by sophomore Cierra Simpson who has 18 aces (0.40 per set). Gabby Simpson ranks second with 13 aces and senior Kelsey English has 11 aces.

Defensively the Buffs are led by Cierra Simpson, who has recorded 3.56 digs per set. Taylor Simpson is second on the team with 2.31 digs per set and Gabby Simpson is third with 1.73 digs per set. CU is also blocking well, averaging 2.28 blocks per set. Freshman Anna Pfefferle leads the Buffs with 0.92 blocks per set with two block solos and 33 block assists, and English ranks second with 0.68 blocks per set.

Utah starts conference play with a 10-1 record. The loss came on Sept. 19 against then-No. 12 BYU in three sets (25-18, 25-16, 25-7). Chelsey Schofield leads the Utes with 3.42 kills per set and Bailey Bateman is attacking at a team-best .391 clip. Utah has used two setters this season. Kendall Cygan is averaging 5.74 assists per set, while Jessie Jorgenson is recording 4.32 assists per set. Shelby Dalton has a team-best 2.68 digs per set and Bateman is averaging 1.12 blocks per set.

UU leads the all-time series against the Buffs 6-5. Since joining the Pac-12, CU is 2-4 against the Utes. In each of the last two years, the two teams have won the contest played on their home court.

UO has recorded a perfect 9-0 nonconference record entering Pac-12 play, which includes a 5-0 record at home. Liz Brenner has a team-best 3.00 kills per set and Martenne Bettendorf is second for the Ducks with 2.94 kills per set. Maggie Scott and Shellsy Ashen have directed the team to a .298 hitting percentage, the third best in the conference. Scott is averaging 6.66 assists per set, while Ashen is handing out 5.31 assists per set. Defensively, Amanda Benson leads UO with 3.69 digs per set and Serena Warner is averaging 1.18 blocks per set.  

The Ducks lead the all-time series 8-2. This will be the only meeting between Oregon and CU this year.
