Cats Shine on Day One of Wildcat Invitational

TUCSON, Ariz. – The Wildcats were nothing short of dominant on Friday, as junior Inge Hendrikx and freshman Hanna Sohn both advanced to the quarterfinals of the their respective singles brackets, while all three doubles tandems moved into the winner’s bracket on day one of the Wildcat Invitational.

Hendrikx was tested in singles play, but grinded out consecutive three-set victories, defeating Colorado State’s Maddie Buxton 6-2, 3-6, 6-3, before taking down Northern Arizona’s Sara Brown 6-4, 6-7, 6-1 later in the afternoon to solidify her place in the Navy Singles Bracket quarterfinals.

Sohn was not to be outdone, as the freshman had herself a fantastic college debut, taking down UTEP’s Jeannez Daniel in dominating fashion, 6-3, 6-0, before earning a dramatic 7-5, 3-6, 7-6 victory over Mississippi State’s Timea Guibe to punch her ticket to the Crimson Singles Bracket quarterfinals.

Both Hendrikx and Sohn posted perfect 3-0 marks on the day, as each helped guide their respective doubles partners to opening round victories. Sohn paired up with junior Shayne Austin to defeat NAU’s tandem of Hailey Rochin and Marta Lewandoska 8-7(3), while Hendrikx and junior Briar Preston easily defeated UTSA’s duo of Alena Shichkova and Lina Hallgren 8-3.

Austin, Preston, and freshman Devin Chypyha all picked up opening round victories in singles play as well, before falling in their respective second round matchups.

Austin defeated Colorado State’s Adriana Wojakowska in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4, while Preston followed suit, taking down UTSA’s Jacobea Junger 6-3, 6-2. Chypytha recorded her first collegiate victory over Marquette’s Aleeza Kanner, 6-2, 6-3.

Arizona will get back after it tomorrow, as tournament play will resume with doubles action beginning at 9:00 a.m. MST.
