Men’s Golf Heads to Nike Collegiate Invitational
The Arizona men’s golf team will open the third of its four fall tournaments on Monday when it begins play at the two-day at the inaugural Nike Collegiate Invitational in Fort Worth, TX.
TCU will a loaded field at the historic par-70 Old Colonial Country Club, with teams to play 36 holes on Monday and complete the event with 18 holes on Tuesday. In addition to TCU, Arizona will face off with No. 4 Texas, No. 5 Georgia, No. 7 Stanford, No. 8 Washington, No. 11 Oklahoma, No. 16 Vanderbilt, No 24 Southern California and 25th-ranked Oregon, as well as Duke and OhioState. All schools in the field of participation this are Nike Golf’s Elite programs.
“We’re looking forward to it,” head coach Jim Anderson said. “We get to play a historic course like Colonial…and you can’t ask more from this field, it’s the best of the best. So we’re certainly looking forward to teeing up with a very strong field this week.”
“It’s definitely challenging anytime you go to a course that you’ve never seen before. Luckily for this event no other teams have seen it either. People are familiar with it by what they’ve seen on television, but Chris Nallen’s done an incredible job getting yardage books ready for our guys, so we usually have a pretty good idea of where we want to hit the ball in the practice rounds and we’re able to adjust after seeing the course once, and then ready to go for round one.”
Freshman, George Cunningham who leads the team with a 72.83 scoring average and two rounds at par or better this season, will play in the No. 1 position for Arizona at the NCI. He will take to Colonial in search of his second top-10 finish in three starts this season.
Senior Alex McMahon will play No. 2 spot, followed by classmate Brenden Redfern at No. 3, junior Kolton Lapa at No. 4 and freshman Max Donohue at the No. 5.
“Our team knows the importance to this event,” Anderson said. “Without putting any extra emphasis on this particular week, we know we have a great opportunity…We’ve got a very talented group with some senior leaders and some freshman with a little bit of inexperience, and the mentality is that we’re going to do what we normally do. And if we execute the best of our ability then our result will come and we will have a good finish.”
