Arizona Dominates Day Two of Wildcat Invitational
TUCSON, Ariz. – Hanna Sohn’s impressive tournament performance continued on day two of the Wildcat Invitational. She boasted a second consecutive 3-0 day to run her record to a perfect 6-0 in tournament play thus far after claiming a singles victory and two doubles wins on Saturday, putting her in position to win the Cardinal Singles Bracket.
Sohn and Shayne Austin also strung together consecutive winning doubles performances to clinch a spot in the Wildcat Doubles Bracket final, while Inge Hendrikx earned a spot in the Navy Singles Bracket final.
The Austin/Sohn duo defeated UTSA’s Miriam Rosell and Jacobea Junger 8-3 in the quarterfinals and took down Mississippi State’s Louise Ronaldson and Alexandra Corder 8-7(2). They will play Erin Gebes and Ana Pimienta from Marquette in the championship Sunday morning.
Inge Hendrikx and Briar Preston dropped a tough second round match to Marquette’s Erin Gebes and Ana Pimienta 8-5, while Laura Oldham and Devin Chypyha also lost a tightly contested match as they fell to Colorado State’s Rebecca Costa and Madison Porter 8-5.
Laura Oldham paired up with Inge Hendrikx in the back draw of doubles and earned a win against UTSA’s Nicole Karaklis and Irene Gandara 8-4.
After a quick break, the Wildcats took the court again for singles play.
Inge Hendrikx advanced by earning a hard fought victory against UTSA’s Irene Gandara 6-0, 4-6, 6-3. She will take on Mississippi State’s Alex Corder tomorrow in the final of the Navy Singles Bracket.
Hanna Sohn earned a semifinal win in a thriller against Marquette’s Vanessa Foltinger 6-3, 7-6. She will face New Mexico’s Rachana Batt tomorrow in the final of the Cardinal Singles Bracket.
In the back draw matches, Devin Chypyha took the first set against Texas State’s Pippa Carr 6-3, but Carr was unable to finish the match and was forced to retire, while Shayne Austin defeated UTEP’s Duda Santos 6-3, 6-3. Meanwhile, Laura Oldham and Briar Preston were each defeated by default in their respective matches.
The Wildcat Invitational will conclude tomorrow starting with doubles action beginning at 9:00 a.m. MST.
