Beavers Fall to No. 18 Arizona State

Oct 5, 2014

TEMPE, Ariz. – The Oregon State women’s soccer team held No. 18 Arizona State off the board for 74 minutes, but was unable to overcome a 75th minute goal, as the Beavers fell 1-0 to the Sun Devils Sunday afternoon in Tempe, Ariz.

“Our girls bounced back today and played an extremely good match against a very good ASU team,” said head coach Linus Rhode. “Our defensive play and overall fight was terrific today. On offense, we generated some good looks early on, but overall we need to continue to focus on that area of our game.”

Oregon State (0-9-3, 0-3-0 Pac-12) created some early opportunities. Redshirt-freshman Samantha Moultrie placed a shot on target within the first two minutes of the game. Sophomore Kathryn Baker followed that up by getting her head on the end of a corner from sophomore Sabrina Santarossa, but the effort sailed high.

Freshman Nikki Faris forced a save from Arizona State (8-1-3, 1-0-2) with a shot on target in the sixth minute.

The Beavers held the Sun Devils without a shot for the first 29 minutes of the contest, before ASU’s Aly Moon headed the ball wide of the target at 29:10.

Sophomore Annie Govig came forward from her left back position to fire a shot on frame in the 52nd minute, but again Morris was up to the challenge.

The Sun Devils broke through in the 75th minute, when Cali Farquharson scored her 10th of the season to give Arizona State the lead.

The Beavers fought to find a goal in the final 15 minutes, and senior Julia Sattler took a shot with just 30 seconds remaining, but the effort was saved and the Sun Devils took the one-goal victory.

Freshman goalkeeper Bella Geist made six saves in the contest, while Baker, Govig and junior Gwen Bieck all played the full 90 minutes in the field.

Oregon State will return to action Friday, when it hosts Colorado.
