Biryukova, Bashota Capture Singles Titles
PULLMAN, Wash. – Washington State’s Maria Biryukova and Donika Bashota captured singles titles Saturday afternoon during the second day of play at the 2014 WSU Invitational.
In Flight 2 singles, Biryukova took home the championship in an exciting match as she defeated Idaho’s Galina Bykova, 6-1, 7-6. Bashota impressed at her first WSU Invitational, posting a decisive 7-5, 6-0 victory over Oregon’s Lina Akesson, earning her the Flight 3 singles crown.
In Flight 1 doubles play, Lize Leenknecht and Donika Bashota opened the day with a tough 8-4 loss to Oregon’s Nia Rose and Alyssa Tobita. The duo rebounded and posted an 8-4 victory over Portland’s Maja Mladenovic and Sophie Van Den Aarssen. Also in the No. 1 doubles flight, Elizaveta Luzina and Victoria Matejevic won their pair of matches, posting 8-4 victories against both Portland’s Mladenovic and Van Den Aarssen and Idaho’s Emmie Marx and Rita Bermudez.
Biryukova and Nastia Vasyukhina shined in Flight 2 doubles, as they defeated Portland’s Saroop Dhatt and Emily Gould, 8-5. The duo followed with an 8-4 victory over Idaho’s Bykova and Lucia Badillos.
The Washington State women’s tennis team will wrap up the 2014 WSU Invitational with doubles matches Sunday starting at 10 a.m. at the WSU Outdoor Tennis Courts.
