McDonald Takes Home Consolation Crown at All-Americans
LOS ANGELES - After falling in the first round of the Men's ITA All-American Championships, Bruin sophomore Mackenzie McDonald stormed back to take the consolation singles title on Monday at the University of Tulsa's Michael D. Case Tennis Center.
A 9-16 seed in the main draw, McDonald lost to Minnesota's Leandro Toledo, 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 in Thursday's first round. He then was seeded No. 2 in the consolation draw, eventually winning five-straight matches - including four three setters - to win the back draw. His run culminated with a 7-6(6), 6-1 win over Ohio State's Chris Diaz on Sunday.
With the win, McDonald earns an automatic bid to next month's USTA/ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships in Flushing Meadows, New York.
