Quote Sheet: Gallimore, Softli, Bennett

Oct 6, 2014

UW women's soccer got a 2-1 win over Cal Sunday, Oct. 5, its first Pac-12 victory. Head coach Lesle Gallimore and UW's two goal scorers, Jaclyn Softli and Kate Bennett, each gave their take on the importance of the win.

UW head coach Lesle Gallimore

On the importance of Sunday’s win:
"That’s a huge, huge, huge result for our team, and a hard fought result. That game was brutal. Temperatures are in the 80’s, it’s the Sunday game, which is always tough for everybody, it was a chess match I think on both sides. No one was pressing, just kind of trying to probe and find different ways to get in."

On the two goal scorers:
"I’m super happy for Kate Bennett that she found the back of the net and I’m really happy for Jaclyn. It’s her first Pac-12 goal."

On the resilience of her team:
"There were obviously a lot of different opportunities for both teams to get the game-winner. I thought our best one came right before that when Becca and Rachel and a little miscue and Rachel ended up hitting over the bar. Like I told the team afterwards, we could have hung our heads and stopped playing and put it to overtime, which I don’t think was going to bode well for us more than them to be honest, from a fatigue standpoint. But we didn’t."

On getting three points before heading home:
"We talked about grinding out points, and we would have been happy with one, but I can’t even tell you how pleased I am to get three going home for three games."

UW senior forward Jaclyn Softli

On her game-winning goal:
"Beautiful ball from Shannon right over the top of the defense. I knew their goalie had been playing out all game so I knew she was going to be high. I looked up and she was right there and I got a touch on it. It went through her legs, and that’s what happened."

On the win over Cal:
"First Pac-12 win, that’s huge. We needed an uplifting before next weekend. We’ve got three more home games before we are on the road again and this just builds our confidence going forward."

UW senior midfielder Kate Bennett

On her goal in the 32nd minute:
"I think it was from a throw in. I just took a touch forward and hit it as hard as I could and it ended up somehow in the goal. I kind of don’t remember, it was so exciting."

On beating No. 12 Cal:
"Cal’s a really good team. It’s definitely good to get points from this weekend; this is one of our tougher weekends. To know that we can come back, even after they scored, it’s good to know that we can still push back and grind it out for points."

On returning to Cal, where she played for two years before transferring:
"I have a lot of good memories here at Cal. It was good to come and to see friends from when I played here and to ultimately get a win."
