Oct 10, 2014

STANFORD, Calif. – The University of Washington women’s tennis team cruised through the first two rounds of the USTA/ITA Northwest Regionals Friday afternoon advancing three singles and three doubles pairs to the round of 32.

In singles action, 13th-seeded Elianne Douglas-Miron opened her day with an easy 6-1, 6-1 defeat over Fresno State’s Tanya Murtagh. Her round of 64 match proved to be a little tougher as  Sacramento State’s Olivia Boija evened up the set count with a 6-4 win in set two sending the match to the deciding third set. The pair battled it out with Douglas-Miron claiming a 7-5 win to move on to the round of 32 for the second-straight year.

Douglas-Miron will be joined by Natali Coronel who picked up a first round win over USF’s Thyra Taune (6-2, 3-6, 7-5) before defeating UC Davis’ Kristy Jorgensen 6-2, 6-2. Julija Lukac will also continue on as she knocked off USF’s Marina Nikolic 7-5, 7-5, to open the day then outlasted Santa Clara’s Chelby Cooke, 6-4, 6-2.

Three other Huskies earned wins in the round of 128 before falling in the next round. Riko Shimizu didn’t allow a point in her 6-0, 6-0 victory over UC Davis’ Claire Meunier while sophomore Angela Chen claimed a 6-0, 6-3 win over Megan Gavi of Portland State and freshman Miki Kobayashi, playing in her first match as a Husky, posted a 6-3, 6-0 against Danielle Zinn of Santa Clara.

Doubles play also saw three Husky duos advance to the next round.  Douglas-Miron and Shimizu picked up right where they left off a year ago with an 8-3 defeat over Eastern Washington’s Carolina Lopez and Rachel Swindell. Additionally the pairs of Natali Coronel/Julija Lukac and Miki Kobayashi/Grace Ysidora earned 8-0 and 8-5 wins, respectively.
