UCLA Posts Season-Opening Victory Against Washington State

LOS ANGELES - The Bruins won 11 of 14 races on Friday in a season-opening, 143-104 victory over Washington State at Spieker Aquatics Center. Juniors Katie Kinnear and Arlyn Upshaw each won a pair of races.

Other race winners in the UCLA win were seniors Monica Dornick and Kacey Milligan, juniors Katy Campbell and Allison Wine, sophomore Linnea Mack, freshman Anna Quinn and the 200 Medley Relay team.

The meet opened with the victory in the 200 Medley Relay, as Kinnear, Wine, Mack and Dornick swam a time of 1:41.66, a UCLA-Washington State meet record. The Bruins also posted the second-place spot from the B team of sophomore Madison White, senior Taylor Carlson and freshmen Katie Grover and Carly Reid (1:44.37).

In the 1000 Freestyle, Quinn made her collegiate debut with a first-place showing in a time of 10:34.36, while junior Shannon Cheung was third (10:42.34). Campbell gave the Bruins back-to-back, Freestyle victories with a winning mark of 1:50.26 in the 200 Free. UCLA posted the top five times in the event: Dornick (1:50.52), White (1:51.58), Reid (1:51.89) and senior Ally Loper (1:52.88).

Kinnear recorded her first win of the afternoon with a UCLA-WSU meet record swim of 55.44 in the 100 Backstroke. Grover was fourth (58.01). In the 100 Breaststroke, Wine made a triumphant return to the Bruin lineup with a 1:03.32 to take the event, while sophomore Brigitte Winkler had the third-best time of 1:05.19.

In the 200 Butterfly, Upshaw won the first of two events with a 2:01.41, just out-touching senior Noelle Tarazona (2:01.68). In the final race before the first break, Mack made it seven in a row for the Bruins with a quick 22.85 in the 50 Free. It not only was a UCLA-WSU meet record, but also an NCAA Division I ‘B’ qualifying time.

Out of the break, Dornick made it eight straight for the home team with a UCLA-WSU meet record swim of 50.51 in the 100 Free. The Bruins notched the top four times in the event, with White going 51.93 and Grover and fellow freshman Sarah Kaunitz posting times of 52.12. Washington State came back with wins in the 200 Back and 200 Breast. The top UCLA swimmer in the 200 Back was freshman Hannah Grubbs, who was third at 2:08.42. In the 200 Breast, Carlson led the Bruin contingent with a second-place 2:19.60.

Milligan got the Bruins back on the winning track with a triumphant swim in the 500 Free (5:02.81), while sophomore Hayden Walker notched the third-best time of 5:09.25. In the 100 Fly, UCLA tallied the top four times, led by Kinnear’s second win of the day (55.15). Grover was second best (55.48), followed by Mack (55.49) and junior Madison Applegate (55.85).

In the penultimate race of the meet, Upshaw won her second of the afternoon with a 4:24.00 in the 400 Individual Medley. Freshman MK Kish had the second-best mark (4:26.17), followed by Campbell (4:27.91). The Cougars concluded the meet with a win in the 200 Free Relay. The Bruins were second with a 1:35.87 by White, sophomores Savannah Steffen and Maggie Burton and Mack, as well as third with a 1:36.00 by Tarazona, senior Jessica Khojasteh, Carlson and Dornick.

The UCLA swimming team is back in action on Saturday, Oct. 25 at UC Santa Barbara. The meet starts at 12 p.m.
