Beavers Drop Match to Utes 2-0

Oct 12, 2014

CORVALLIS, Ore. – The Oregon State women’s soccer team finished with 14 shots and nine corner kicks, but was unable to overcome a two-goal deficit, as the Beavers fell to Utah 2-0 Sunday afternoon at Paul Lorenz Field.

“I’ll give Utah credit, because their first goal was a really good goal,” said head coach Linus Rhode. “We did some really good things offensively. We created some really good chances today. We need to build on that and keep creating those opportunities.”

Utah (8-3-3, 1-3-1 Pac-12) opened the scoring less than five minutes into the match on a goal from Katie Taylor. The Beavers (0-11-3, 0-5-0) responded by creating a number of solid scoring chances in the opening frame. Sophomore Sabrina Santarossa fired a left-footed shot from the top of the box in the 12th minute, but her effort was saved. Santarossa came close to recording an assist just three minutes later, when she whipped a corner into the box, but sophomore Kathryn Baker’s header was just over the crossbar.

Redshirt-freshman Samantha Moultrie aimed a header toward goal in the 51st minute, but her effort was blocked.

Utah added to the advantage in the 62nd on a goal from Jill Robinson, as the Utes stretched the edge to 2-0.

The Beavers had a chance to pull one back in the 67th, as junior Gwen Bieck headed the ball on target, but the attempt was saved. Senior Julia Sattler followed up Bieck’s shot by redirecting the rebound towards goal, but her header was cleared off the line by a Utah defender.

Moultrie came close to putting Oregon State within striking distance in the 75th minute, when she took a shot on the volley from inside the box. Her effort was just over the crossbar, however, and the Utes took the two-goal victory.

“We were much more aggressive in the match today,” Rhode said. “We were able to get off good shots and good crosses. We need to continue to be aggressive in the attacking third, like we were today.”

The Beavers will have an extended break, before they return to action on Monday Oct. 20 to take on Washington in Seattle.
