Nashville, Tenn.—The Arizona State women’s tennis team wrapped up Vanderbilt’s June Stewart Invitational with a 5-4 record in its matches against Purdue on Sunday.  The Sun Devils compiled a 3-3 singles mark and 2-1 doubles record in the final round of play.

Arizona State finished the tournament with a 9-11 singles mark and 7-2 doubles record, combining for a 16-13 record overall.

“We played some very competitive singles and doubles matches today against a very good Purdue team,” said ASU head coach Sheila McInerney.  “All 3 doubles matches were close and singles was equally competitive.”

Desirae Krawczyk, Leighann Sahagun, and Gussie O’Sullivan cruised past their opponents, each winning in straight sets.  Stephanie Vlad and Alexandra Osborne fell to Deborah Suarez and Nicole Robinson, respectively, in two straight.  After winning the first set against Purdue’s Andjela Djokovic, 6-4, Kassidy Jump was downed in the second set, 6-2.  Djokovic nabbed the win in the tiebreak.

In doubles play, Krawczyk and Sahagun defeated Vidal and Davila, 6-2, while Ebony Panoho and Osborne fell to Kapitany and Suarez, 6-4.  Jump and O’Sullivan went down to the wire with Purdue’s Djokovic and Robinson, but ultimately gutted out the 7-6(10) victory.

“Desirae played extremely well coming away with 4 singles wins, as did Leighann,” said McInerney.  “I thought both Gussie and Alex made great strides today which will help us down the road.”
