STANFORD, Calif. – Both Washington State doubles teams fell in the third round of play at the USTA/ITA Northwest Regionals Sunday at the Taube Family Tennis Center, ending the Cougars’ stay at the event.
In the doubles main draw, both WSU forces came up short in the round of 16 to seeded California pairs. Donika Bashota and Victoria Matejevic fought the No.1-seeded Maegan Manasse and Denise Starr before falling 8-3. Lize Leenknecht and Elizaveta Luzina looked for the upset against the No.3-seeded duo of Klara Fabikova and Zsofi Susanyi before the Cal duo won 8-5.
In Sunday consolation doubles play, Grace Lymer-Sullivan and Holly Monahan fell 8-4 to Milica Hadzi-Tanovic and Ines Teixeira of San Francisco, while Maria Biryukova and Nastia Vasyukhina were swept 8-0 by Seattle’s Michelle Lui and Kelli Woodman. Biryukova and Vasyukhina came back to defeat Eastern Washington’s Rachel Swindell and Janaya Smith, 8-1.
In singles consolation play, Luzina opened the day for the Cougars, posting a sound 6-1, 6-3 victory over Seattle’s Barbara Carey. Biryukova and Bashota both followed Luzina’s lead by posting identical 6-4, 6-0 victories, Birykova over Elaine Chesoni of Santa Clara and Bashota over Washington’s Riko Shimizu.
Lymer-Sullivan came up big in consolation play Sunday, rallying from a set down to defeat Franziska Koehler of Gonzaga, 3-6, 6-4, 1-0 (15-13) victory. Leenknecht and Vasyukhina also went to the third set but fell short as Julianna Bacelar of San Jose State defeated Leenknecht 5-7, 6-3, 1-0 (5) and Swindell outlasted Vasyukhina, 2-6, 6-0, 1-0 (4). Monahan fell to Fresno State’s Anna Susdorf, 6-2, 6-2.
The Cougars concluded their fall season at the ITA Northwest Regionals and will return home to prepare for the 2015 spring season, which begins in January.
