Annie Alvarado Named UCLA/Muscle Milk Student-Athlete of the Week
Sophomore midfielder Annie Alvarado from the UCLA women’s soccer team was named the UCLA/Muscle Milk Student-Athlete of the Week for Oct. 6-12.
Alvarado picked a great time to score her first collegiate points. In a big matchup against No. 2/3-ranked Stanford, she assisted on the game-tying goal and then scored the game-winning goal as the top-ranked Bruins came from behind to hand Stanford its first loss of the season, 2-1. With UCLA trailing late after a 53rd minute goal by the Cardinal, UCLA staged a comeback in the final 13 minutes. In the 77th minute, Alvarado found Ally Courtnall along the right sideline, and Courtnall sent a strike into the upper left corner for the tying goal. In the 85th minute, Alvarado scored the game-winner after Sam Mewis sent her a perfect through ball on the right side. Alvarado went far post to beat the Stanford goalie for her first career goal. The win extended UCLA’s unbeaten streak to a school-record 34 games.
