Oct 16, 2014

SEATTLE - The University of Washington softball team swept its fall softball doubleheader Thursday at Husky Softball Stadium, defeating Northwest University by 21-0 and 18-1 scores. Fourteen different Huskies collected hits and the team used five pitchers in the pair of wins.

In the first game of the day, junior Kimberlee Souza led the way offensively, hitting a pair of homeruns and collecting three RBIs.

Senior Kylee Lahners jump-started the UW offense as her stand-up double scored a pair in the bottom of the first. Fellow senior Kelli Suguro followed suit as her bases clearing double plated three more runs and propelled the Huskies offense to an early 6-0 lead.

Souza belted back-to-back homeruns in the second and third to give the Dawgs a 12-0 advantage after three innings of play.

In the fourth, starting pitcher Casey Stangel added another Husky homerun to give the Dawgs a 19-0 lead. Freshman Kirstyn Thomas’ single scored two more as Washington cruised to a 21-0 victory.

In the circle, Stangel pitched three complete innings and Hailey Bator tossed the final two, striking out five Northwest batters.

The second game of the day saw the Huskies score in each of the first four innings to build a solid lead. Washington cracked the scoreboard early as Souza hit her third homerun of the day in the first inning. Back-to-back singles by Ali Aguilar and Lahners set her up as the Dawgs took a 3-0 advantage.

Souza led the way offensively in game two, going 4-for-4 with five RBIs. Fellow junior Courtney Gano added a three-run homerun in the fourth.

The Eagles cracked the scoreboard in the top of the fifth, but the Huskies negated that with four runs of their own in the sixth to make it an 18-1 final.

Kasey Stanchek pitched three solid innings without allowing a hit and striking out six. Freshmen Kristin Cochran and Thomas combined to pitch the final three innings.

The Huskies conclude their fall season with a 7-0 record, outscoring opponents, 101-2.
