Marker; Sohn Advance on Day One of ITA Regional Play
SAN DIEGO—University of Arizona sophomore Lauren Marker and freshman Hanna Sohn both find themselves in the round of 32, after each secured victories on day one of ITA Regional Championship play on Thursday.
No. 58 ranked and sixth-seeded Marker lived up to her preseason hype, as she easily dismantled Long Beach State’s Julie Gerard in straight sets, 6-1, 6-0, to clinch her spot in the tournament’s third round after receiving an opening round bye. Marker will take on Arizona State’s Leighann Sahagun tomorrow morning for a spot in the round of 16.
Sohn followed suit, taking down San Diego State’s Jana Buth in consecutive sets, 7-5, 6-2, as she improved to 4-1 on the fall and punched her ticket into the event's third round. She will have an opportunity to clinch her first ranked win of her career tomorrow, as she’ll take on UCLA’s No. 57 Catherine Harrison.
Junior Austin Shayne also picked up a win on Thursday, as she easily defeated USD’s Mikayla Morkel-Brink, 6-4, 6-3 before eventually falling in second round action.
Marker and Sohn will begin their journey through the doubles bracket tomorrow, as the tandem will go up against Loyola Marymount’s Lisa Piller and Kylie Waschuk in the round of 32. Marker and Sohn were granted a first round bye.
