Wrestling Set To Host Intersquad, Alumni Homecoming Events

Oct 16, 2014

TEMPE, Ariz.—The Arizona State wrestling program will host its annual Maroon and Gold Intersquad in conjunction with its Wrestling Homecoming Reunion on Oct. 24 and 25, head coach Zeke Jones announced on Thursday.

“It’s a great weekend because we’re doing a variety of things,” Jones said. “In addition to the Intersquad, which gives us an opportunity to compete for the first time, put a singlet on, get our heart rate up and compete, we’re also hosting our alumni reunion.

On Friday, Oct. 24, ASU will host a reception for the alumni and their families, with a chance to meet the new coaching staff of Jones and assistants Lee Pritts, Chris Pendleton, and Jordan Oliver, at former Sun Devil Jim Gressley’s residence in Chandler.

Alumni can email ASUWrestling@asu.edu for more information on the reception.

Saturday will be the first opportunity both alumni and fans to see the 2014-15 wrestlers in action, at the Maroon and Gold Intersquad at the Riches Wrestling Complex. The preliminary matches will begin at 10 a.m. PT, following with the finals at 3:30 p.m. PT. Both the morning session and afternoon session are open to the public.

Following the conclusion of the Intersquad will be the ASU Wrestling Homecoming Barbecue at the Cavanaugh/Dickey Athletic Olympic Sports Plaza, located just outside the wrestling practice facility.

“Our alumni have left a history and tradition in the program, and not only does this weekend allow them see the new era, it gives them all a chance to come together and tell old war stories,” Jones said. “The group of the past and the group of the future get to meet, socialize, and learn from each other. I think it’s very important that we host an event like this.”

ASU wrestling opens the 2014-15 season on Sunday, Nov. 2 at the Daktronics Open in Brookings, S.D. The first home dual of the season is set for Friday, Nov. 21 against Utah Valley at 7 p.m. PT at Wells Fargo Arena.
